STARZL, THOMAS E., GEORGE W. BUTZ, JR., WILLIAM H. MEYER, JR., ELIZABETH E. TOROK, AND RALPH E. DOLKART. E e c t in dogs of various portal vein shunts on response to imulin. Am. J. Physiol. 203(2): 275-277. 1962.-Surgical alterations of portal drainage patterns were made in dogs in order to determine the effect of redistribution of endogenous and injected insulin. With an Eck fistula, progressive diminution of hypoglycemic response to insulin was noted. With a reverse Eck fistula, the fall in venous blood sugar was comparable whether injection was given via the portal system or systemically. With portacaval transposition, in which the pancreatic drainage is diverted from the liver, no alterations in general health, fasting blood sugars, or insulin response were noted. The results are discussed in relation to recent concepts in which insulin is thought to regulate or be regulated by the liver

Anatomy of extrahepatic portosystemic shunts in dogs as determined by computed tomography angiography.

Congenital extrahepatic portosystemic shunts are anomalous vessels joining portal and systemic venous circulation. These shunts are often diagnosed sonographically, but computed tomography (CT) angiography produces high-resolution images that give a more comprehensive overview of the abnormal portal anatomy. CT angiography was performed on 25 dogs subsequently proven to have an extrahepatic por...

Extracorporeal portal decompression using a graphite-benzalkonium-heparin shunt.

TREATMENT of bleeding esophageal varices remains a difficult problem. A significant number of patients with this condition are not suitable for emergency portasystemic venous shunt operations. Recent reports describe the usefulness of dilated umbilical veins in humans as an entry to the portal system for hepatoportography.1 7,8 XWhite,13 Piccone,9 and Christophersen 2 and co-workers used the um...

Effect of infusion of insulin into portal vein on hepatic extraction of insulin in anesthetized dogs.

Hepatic extraction of insulin was examined in anesthetized dogs before and after constant infusion of insulin (20 and 50 mU/min) with use of samples from the portal vein, mesenteric vein, left common hepatic vein, and the femoral artery. In 19 dogs, measurement of portal vein insulin concentration indicated an overall recovery of 110% of the insulin infused. The range varied from 9 to 303%, ind...

Response of extrapancreatic glucagon to glycemic changes under chronic insulin deficiency in dogs.

Since the secretion of pancreatic glucagon is largely influenced by the changes in the blood glucose level, the response of extrapancreatic glucagon was investigated in totally pancreatectomized dogs under chronic insulin deficiency. Insulin-induced hypoglycemia did not alter plasma glucagon in the portal vein in a group of 5 pancreatectomized dogs, but the decrease of the blood glucose was sma...

Response of extrapancreatic glucagon to glycemic changes.

Since the secretion of pancreatic glucagon is largely influenced by changes in the blood glucose level, the response of extrapancreatic glucagon to glycemic changes was investigated in man and dogs. Neither insulin-induced hypoglycemia nor arginine infusion caused a rise in plasma glucagon in two patients with total pancreatectomy, but plasma glucagon increased transiently in one of the two pat...
